About Us

Gecko Lounge began as a vision born from the love of Lake Malawi and a shared passion for community development. It all started with frequent trips to Cape Maclear made by two high school friends, Paul Kite and myself. Paul’s deep connection to the lake and its people inspired him to initiate projects that would benefit the local community. Among these was the Chembe Water Project, a water filtration initiative aimed at providing clean and safe drinking water to Chembe village, significantly improving public health in the area.

Paul also had a great love for music, especially as a DJ, and he dreamt of creating a vibrant, fun-filled space by the lake where people could unwind and enjoy themselves. This shared vision drew me into the project, and I became a silent partner, providing partial funding to support Paul’s dream of establishing Gecko Lounge.

Tragically, Paul suffered a debilitating car accident that left him paraplegic, but his passion and drive remained undiminished. Despite the challenges, he continued to grow Gecko Lounge into a thriving business and a beloved destination in Cape Maclear. After Paul’s untimely passing, his family approached me to purchase his shares, as they were unable to manage the business due to their overseas commitments. In 2018, I took full ownership of Gecko Lounge.

Shortly after, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced us to temporarily shut down operations, delaying renovation plans for several years. However, with the reopening of tourism and the completion of the road to Cape Maclear in 2022, we were able to reignite our efforts to transform Gecko Lounge into the ultimate lakeside destination.

Today, Gecko Lounge features a range of modern amenities, including fully functional rooms, a swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a bar, and a kitchen, all designed to provide an unforgettable lakeside experience. The design integrates local materials, blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings of the village and the lake.

As a passionate advocate for environmental conservation, I have incorporated eco-friendly practices into the renovation process. From the sustainable sourcing of materials to waste paper recycling initiatives, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint while enhancing the beauty and functionality of Gecko Lounge.
